Principal’s Introduction
Welcome Back Term 3
It was lovely to see staff return ready for another great term at Newborough for our School Development on Monday 17th July and to see students and parents return the following day ready for a great term of learning and growth. For me it was extra special to return to such a warm welcome and see how organised and settled the school is for all our students. Newborough really is a thoughtful and caring school. I would like to sincerely express my thanks and gratitude to Miss Tucknott who excelled as acting Principal in my absence and to Mrs Elisa Phillips who stepped up to the Deputy position. We are fortunate to have such terrific people who can step up and a wonderful team behind them, including parents and carers whose support makes such a big difference. What a great way to start.
We have several new families and staff joining the school this term. Joining our teaching team are three Notre Dame School Experience teachers completing their final practice. Welcome Mr David Graham (Year 6, Mrs Phillips), Miss Frances Clarke (Year 6, Miss Danker), Miss Kathryn Byrne (Year 4, Miss Kos and Mrs Hughes). With such strong mentors I am sure they will thrive. We also welcomed back Mr Peter Blanch and Mr Iain Freeman.
Term Three is promising to be very busy and exciting. Here is just a sample of what to look forward to; Interschool Cross Country, P&C Quiz Night, Athletics Carnivals, Book Week (Read, Grow, Inspire), New Era Visit Pre-Primary Incursion, Father’s Day activities, Year Six Enterprise Fete, School Disco, Constable Care (Pre-primaries), the WA Massed Choir Festival and of course our regular class assemblies.
During the first week I have spent time in every classroom with a focus on re-aquainting with students, assisting with their learning and getting right behind teachers and education assistants with their great work.
Have a fantastic term everyone!

Student Thrives
It is great to hear the successes of our students outside the school environment. From 8th to 10th of July, Ray Shen, Year Six Room 16, and his badminton team, the WA Scorpions, competed in the YONEX U15 Australian National Championships in Adelaide. The Scorpions placed second (the development team) for WA, and the eight players (four boys and four girls) were selected through trials in May. The Scorpions played four team matches against teams from other states and in the end claimed the silver medal in Division 2. Being just twelve, Ray was the youngest boy on the team. He demonstrated attributes of resilience, teamwork and respect. The silver medal was a testimony to his hard work in badminton since he was eight.
Congratulations Ray and best wishes for your future endeavours. As a school we are very proud of your achievements and look forward to hearing more in the future.
Department of Education Connect and Respect
The Minister for Education and Director General have jointly announced measures to help all schools be safer and better learning environments. At Newborough we are very fortunate to have a very supportive and respectful school community with a strong focus on developing all students in a caring and respectful manner. As the quote for this newsletter suggests teamwork with strong values is the way to go. I have included the brief below and exerts from the Department’s expectations to further enhance how we work together.
“Our school community is a vibrant and diverse representation of society, where children learn and grow. We rely on the local community, parents and families to partner with us in their children’s learning journey and encourage open communication.
We all share a responsibility for providing a safe, supportive and productive environment, free from bullying, harassment, discrimination and violence. Parents and carers, and other visitors to our school, support safety by ensuring communication and conduct at school and school activities is respectful. We all have the right to feel safe and be safe at school.
The Department of Education has recently released Connect and Respect, a suite of resources to assist school communities in setting shared and respectful expectations to enable us to continue to work together in the best interests of our children.
This includes when and how to contact the school, what you can expect from us and the behaviours that interfere with teaching and learning. These resources and guidelines will assist us to continue to build upon our culture of connection and engagement, and we will implement them to support our staff to deliver quality education at our school.”
“None of us is as smart as all of us.”

SCHOOL CANTEEN
The first week of canteen was a roaring success! There was alot of happy little faces when they collected their recess. Hopefully they all enjoyed their ordered food.
I have made a few changes to the menu (please refer to the school website) including reducing the price of the cheesies and pizza subs, a new recess baked good and adding a special for Thursday and Friday. Hopefully we can get all this food out, but we can only do it with the help of volunteers.
The canteen needs 3 volunteers for the recess shift and 3 for the lunch shift.
I have set up a volunteer register using the link below.
Can I just clarify that any parent/carer or extended family member with a Working With Children clearance can volunteer on any day they wish, but for each shift, I have allocated a room to be responsible for ensuring I have enough volunteers. Please extend the invite to grandparents, I know they love to help out where they can.
If you can only help out for an hour, or even 30 minutes, this would be amazing too. We all have a good laugh and there's tea and coffee and snacks on offer plus a $5 voucher for anyone that can help for a 2 hour shift.
If you haven't volunteered before, please give it a go. Your kids love seeing you at canteen and I know you'll enjoy it!
Please sign up using the link but you can also send me an email on
newborough.canteen.manager1@gmail.com
I know this week of canteen will be even better!

Chaplaincy News
Welcome back to third term everyone.
I often see students who are feeling overwhelmed. This means their brains are having trouble sorting through information, their bodies are feeling out of sorts, and the impact can manifest through changed behaviour. Signs of this can include overly intense emotions that don’t fit the circumstances, impulsive behaviour, and difficulty in managing their behaviour. Children will feel stuck or are unable to make themselves feel better and they become more negative in their outlook. For our younger students it means being more irritable, increased outbursts and tantrums.
As parents and caregivers, it’s our responsibility to assist children to navigate these feelings. Here are some ways to do this.
1 Notice and Identify - If your child looks like they need help to calm down, stop. Pay attention to what your child’s behaviour is telling you about their feelings before you do or say anything else. You can do this by looking closely at your child, watching their body language, and listening to what your child is saying.
For example, if you ask your child to turn off the TV and have a shower, your child might ignore you, or roll around on the floor and complain loudly. This gives you a clue that your child is feeling angry.
2 Name and Connect - The second step is to label the emotion and connect it with the event. This teaches your child to understand what they’re feeling and why, how their body reacts to this feeling and what words go with the feeling. It also shows your child that you understand how they feel, and that this emotion is OK, even if their behaviour isn’t OK.
For example, if your child is rolling around on the floor and complaining loudly about turning off the TV, you could say, ‘I can see that you’re feeling angry about turning off the TV’.
3 Pause and say nothing - Pausing and saying nothing for a few seconds gives your child time to take in what you’ve just said. It’s hard not to jump in and start talking. You might find it helps to count slowly to five in your head while you wait. This pause might be enough for your child to calm down and move on to something else. Or they might solve the problem for themselves. For example, ‘Could I watch more TV after I’ve had my shower?’
4 Support your child to calm down - Here are some things to try if your child needs longer to calm down:
- Make sure that they’re safe and you’re safe.
- Stay calm and close to your child. This shows that you understand and can handle whatever their emotions are. It also helps them understand that emotions don’t have to be overwhelming.
- Wait for the strong emotion to pass. Be patient. It can be very hard for young children to manage strong feelings.
It’s tempting to say things like ‘Use your words’ or ‘Try taking some deep breaths’. But your child might not be able to respond to these suggestions until their emotions have passed. It’s often best just to wait.
5 Address the behaviour and problem solve - Your child needs to calm down before you can help them solve a problem or change a behaviour you don’t like. What you do after your child has calmed down will depend on the situation. For example, you might need to:
- suggest other ways to react to strong emotions – for example, ‘If you feel excited, clap your hands and jump up and down on the spot’ or ‘If you feel angry, go into your room, and squeeze your pillow hard. Come back when you’re calm’
- reassure or comfort your child – for example, ‘That was a scary thing that happened’ or ‘I’m sorry to see you so sad. Let’s have a hug’
- suggest some solutions for the problem – for example, ‘You could ask for your toy back’
- set some limits – for example, ‘I know you were angry, but hitting is never OK. You’ll have to miss the party tomorrow’.

ATTENDANCE AND ABSENCES
Every day at school is important for every child from Kindergarten to Year 6. Our attendance mantra is EVERY CHILD, EVERYDAY AT SCHOOL. This includes being on time and ready to start the school day.
The school and Principal does not endorse children’s absences to go on holidays, greeting or saying goodbye to fly in fly out parents, special shopping trips and the like. These are unacceptable excuses that we hear too often. Parents are responsible and legally obliged to ensure their children attend school every day possible. Poor attendance not only severely impacts on your child’s learning but also on other children in your child’s class.
If you are having any difficulty getting your child to school let us know and we will try and help. Sometimes it seems easier to give into a child and keep them home for trivial reasons. This is fraught with short term and long-term danger. We have had a lot of success in this area when parents and the school work together. Make no excuses for not attending school.
Department of Education (Western Australia) policy states that all children from Pre-Primary attend school for 5 full days as from the commencement of the school year.
Attendance details are entered electronically twice daily by classroom teachers and the information fed onto a school database. An SMS messaging service endorsed by the Department of Education operates to enable parents to inform the school by text message if their child is going to be absent. The system also automatically sends a message to parents if their child has not arrived at school and no notification has been received. This service assists parents to advise the school of absences and also ensures the safety of children by letting parents know that the child has not arrived at school.
If your child will be absent/sick or late, please contact the school directly either by:
SMS: | 0409 088 585 (preferred method) |
Email: | Newborough.ps.absentee@education.wa.edu.au |
Phone: | 9278 0450 |
Please include only the student’s name and classroom number, reason for absence and the date in any messages. For Example: “John Doe Room 13 absent 1/2/2021 sick with flu”.
Notes are requested from parents for:
- Any absence from school
- Permission to go on vacation during term time
- Permission to leave the school grounds at any time including lunch time
- Nonparticipation in sport and physical education lessons

Particular attention is given to developing the social skills of the children, as well as their confidence and independence.

Every endeavour is made to space excursions/incursions during the year to avoid costs being too great at any one time.
