Principal’s Introduction
STUDENTS AT NPS FOR 2024
If your child (ren) will not be attending Newborough PS next year could you please advise the front office as soon as possible. This will assist us with planning for 2024.
NEWBOROUGH NETBALL CLUB
It was lovely to see how much the Newborough Netball teams have grown and developed over the season. I saw each team play last Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. The enthusiasm was infectious as every player tried their best. There were some amazing passages of play, defending and accurate shooting. All the teams performed exceptionally well. We had several wins, an exciting draw and a competitive loss. I was so proud of all the players on the way they followed the school’s values, especially teamwork. The team spirit was super. Players listened to and responded to outstanding coaching and great support from parents, family and friends. It was nice to see several of our former students and netballers who are now in high school doing a great job as umpires.
Thank you to Head Coach Sonia Johansen for inviting me and well done and congratulations to all the coaches who help guide and develop the teams. Mostly they were a bit camera shy. Great coaching Rebecca Mitchell and Zoe Hadley-Hawley (Year 2), Tanya Cawthorne and Carly Fowkes (Year 3), Zoe Hadley-Hawley and Chris Burch (Year 4), Blanche Blakeney and Kate Brandis (Years 4/5) and Sonia Johansen and Jamie Maxwell (Year 6). Go Newborough!!

NOONGAR SEASONS
DJILBA – First Spring
During this season anything that was underground was eaten. Foods such as bush potatoes, bush onions and other tubers and root systems were eaten during these months. This is the start of the massive flowering explosion that happens in the south-west, beginning with the yellow-flowering plants such as the acacias. Djilba is a transitional time of the year, with some very cold and clear days combining with warmer, rainy and windy days mixing with the occasional sunny day or two. Traditionally, the main food sources included many of the land-based grazing animals including the yongar (kangaroo), the waitj (emu) and the koomal (possum). As the days start to warm up, we start to see and hear the first of the newborns with their proud parents out and about providing them with food, guiding them through foraging tasks and protecting their family units from much bigger animals, including people! The woodland birds are still nest-bound, hence the swooping protective behaviour of the koolbardi (magpie), djidi djidi (willy wag tails) and chuck-a-luck (wattle birds). As the season progresses and the temperatures continue to rise, the flower stalks of the balgas (Grass Trees - Pictured) emerge in preparation for the coming Kambarang season.

BOOK WEEK – Week 6 Monday 21st August – Friday 25th August 2023
Read, Grow, Inspire
Since 1945, the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) has brought children and books together across Australia through Children's Book Week®. During this time schools and public libraries spend one glorious week celebrating books and Australian children's authors and illustrators. Book Week is Wek 6 this term. A range of different Book Week activities will happen in classrooms across the school, including a Book Week Dress Up Day on Wednesday 23rd August 2023. All staff, students and parents are invited to dress up in either their favourite book week character dress or a book character that has inspired them. Staff will promote the theme and Book Week in their classrooms and we will send reminders throughout the next 2 weeks. Please do not feel like you need to spend money on any costume but if you do, also consider Op shops and borrowing costumes as well.

NEWBOROUGH PRIMARY SCHOOL PARENT/GUARDIAN SURVEY
As part of the Newborough Primary School Business Plan 2021-2024, Newborough Primary School is seeking to develop a Communication Strategy to outline the ways in which communications flow within the school, and between the school and its key stakeholders, students, parents, P&C, Board and the broader local community.
To help inform this strategy, the School and School Board sent out a Communications Survey to all Parents/Guardians in the last two weeks of Term 2. Thank you so much to everyone who completed the survey. 171 people completed the survey which is an amazing response. We greatly appreciate the time taken to complete the survey and the comments submitted which we are currently in the process of summarising.
In the coming weeks, we will provide the school community with the findings of the survey and recommendations from the survey for the school to consider for improvement in key areas.
Thank you again for the support shown for completing the survey.

Greetings Newborough School Community
Language helps us express our thought and feelings. It helps to express what is happening around us. Language can either set us up for failure or success. Being specific, using words in their context, and understanding the power of words is so important.
Why am I discussing this?
Words like bullying, lazy, spoiled, and stubborn are used frequently and can have a negative impact but most importantly misrepresent what could be happening.
Bullying vs. Conflict: Kids might label any negative interaction as "bullying." While bullying is repetitive, intentional harm or intimidation, not every negative encounter constitutes bullying. Some are just regular conflicts or misunderstandings.
Lazy vs. Struggling: Labelling a child as "lazy" might be overlooking underlying issues like learning disabilities, ADHD, depression, or personal trauma. It's essential to understand the root cause of a child's behaviour before making judgments.
Shy vs. Introverted: A child who doesn't actively seek social interaction might be called "shy" when, in fact, they might simply be introverted — comfortable and content with more solitude or smaller groups.
Disrespectful vs. Expressive: A child who speaks their mind or questions authority might be labelled as "disrespectful," when they might just be more expressive, curious, or encouraged at home to voice their opinions.
Spoiled vs. Overwhelmed: Sometimes, when children act out during instances like shopping trips, they are labelled as "spoiled." However, they might be overwhelmed due to sensory overload or are simply tired.
Bossy vs. Leadership Tendencies: A child who takes charge might be called "bossy," especially if they are a girl. However, these tendencies could be early signs of leadership skills.
Daydreamer vs. Deep Thinker: Some children are often lost in thought and might be termed "daydreamers" or "distracted" when they might be deep thinkers or processing their world in a more introspective manner.
Stubborn vs. Determined: A child who stands firm on certain points or doesn't easily shift their stance might be termed "stubborn." However, looked at from another angle, they might be displaying determination or deep-rooted beliefs.
Attention-seeking vs. Needing Support: Children who frequently act out might be labelled as "attention-seeking." Still, sometimes these behaviours signal emotional distress or a need for support and understanding.
Dramatic vs. Sensitive: Some children are more emotionally reactive or have stronger empathetic responses. Labelling them as "dramatic" can dismiss their genuine feelings or experiences.
Food for thought.

ATTENDANCE AND ABSENCES
Every day at school is important for every child from Kindergarten to Year 6. Our attendance mantra is EVERY CHILD, EVERYDAY AT SCHOOL. This includes being on time and ready to start the school day.
The school and Principal does not endorse children’s absences to go on holidays, greeting or saying goodbye to fly in fly out parents, special shopping trips and the like. These are unacceptable excuses that we hear too often. Parents are responsible and legally obliged to ensure their children attend school every day possible. Poor attendance not only severely impacts on your child’s learning but also on other children in your child’s class.
If you are having any difficulty getting your child to school let us know and we will try and help. Sometimes it seems easier to give into a child and keep them home for trivial reasons. This is fraught with short term and long-term danger. We have had a lot of success in this area when parents and the school work together. Make no excuses for not attending school.
Department of Education (Western Australia) policy states that all children from Pre-Primary attend school for 5 full days as from the commencement of the school year.
Attendance details are entered electronically twice daily by classroom teachers and the information fed onto a school database. An SMS messaging service endorsed by the Department of Education operates to enable parents to inform the school by text message if their child is going to be absent. The system also automatically sends a message to parents if their child has not arrived at school and no notification has been received. This service assists parents to advise the school of absences and also ensures the safety of children by letting parents know that the child has not arrived at school.
If your child will be absent/sick or late, please contact the school directly either by:
SMS: | 0409 088 585 (preferred method) |
Email: | Newborough.ps.absentee@education.wa.edu.au |
Phone: | 9278 0450 |
Please include only the student’s name and classroom number, reason for absence and the date in any messages. For Example: “John Doe Room 13 absent 1/2/2021 sick with flu”.
Notes are requested from parents for:
- Any absence from school
- Permission to go on vacation during term time
- Permission to leave the school grounds at any time including lunch time
- Nonparticipation in sport and physical education lessons

Please include a reason for early pick up and the approximate time you will be here. Parents/Carers sign the child out on the iPad at the front office. They will be given a ‘Sign Out’ card to hand to the classroom or specialist teacher when they collect the student from the classroom.
EXCURSIONS AND INCURSIONS
During the year teaching staff plan a range of suitable excursions and incursions to introduce, develop or reinforce learning experiences for their class.
Incursions are an opportunity for the children to experience high standard performances covering a wide range of learning areas. The children are able to see national, and sometimes international, performers including musicians, storytellers, artists and many others at a reasonable cost. Particular attention is given to developing the social skills of the children, as well as their confidence and independence.
Formal written permission is required before any child can be taken on an excursion. Every endeavour is made to space excursions/incursions during the year to avoid costs being too great at any one time. If payment is not received by the due date and a payment plan has not been entered into, students will not participate in that particular excursion/incursion and will join a buddy class on that day.
MONEY COLLECTION
When paying for incursions, excursions, or other school activities, please pay via direct deposit into the school bank account.
Newborough Primary School does not accept cash payments.
Money can be paid by online banking (please include your child’s surname and incursion/excursion name as reference). e.g., K Smith Edu-dance.

MOBILE PHONES POLICY
A reminder that the Western Australian Department of Education has a strict ban on students using mobile phones at school. Students who bring any mobile communication device, including phones, to school must hand it in to the classroom teacher or front office where it will be stored until the end of the day. The exception to this is the Years 4-6 students participating in the bring your own devices program, which allows the student to bring laptops to school, but still no mobile phones. Students who may require contacting parents during the school day can do this on the school landline phones with permission of the Admin team if the reason is for an emergency only.
