Principal’s Introduction
Newborough Shines
Having been away from the school for six months I have had the chance to refresh and reset. This has allowed me to step back and see our school in a different context to the hurly burly day to day action that we tend to get sucked into. It’s amazing to see how good our school actually is. We have the most fabulous children who come from a broad range of backgrounds. Our parents are so supportive, embracing a strong family culture right across the school. The staff are truly amazing. From the Front Office team, non-teaching and teaching staff alike there is a very strong focus on putting students first. You only get this sort of culture when everyone knows and respects what the organisation is all about and pulls together as a team. Our values shine through. We can celebrate all the great things that happen and address any problems and issues quickly when they arise. Always feel free to come and talk to me or a member of my team if there is something that is not quite right or that we need to do better or need to know.
Keep up the great work Newborough. This truly is a great school.
Pick Up and Drop Off
The vast majority of parents do a fabulous job making sure students arrive and depart safely during the busy period of drop off and pick up each day. To do this requires constant supervision, vigilance and training so safety becomes the norm. Unfortunately, we still have one or two parents who flaunt the safety of their own children and others by stopping in non-designated drop off/pick up areas. Last week Mr Stenhouse and I witnessed a very dangerous situation where a parent pulled across a neighbouring driveway and a child hopped out of the car and ran in front of their own car and straight onto the road. Fortunately, we were able to stop the child just before they went onto the road and in front of on coming traffic.
Please follow the signage and only park in designated parking bays. Be aware that children sometimes act impulsively without thought.
I will remind students about road safety, especially drop off and pick up and stranger danger at this week’s assembly. I have also arranged for an officer from the City of Stirling to visit to see if there are any additional road markings and signage that may improve safety. We are looking at yellow line markings with NO STOPPING for some areas of particular concern.
Take care
John Worthy

UPCOMING TERM FOUR WHOLE SCHOOL INCURSIONS/EXCURSIONS AND COSTS(Money, Money, Money)
SCITECH – Wednesday 25th and Thursday 26th October 2023 (Week 3, Term 4)
As a replacement for the cancelled Bricks for Kids incursion in Term One, we reorganised a Scitech incursion for all pre-primary to Year 6 students in Week 3, Term 4. The lovely ladies in the front office will apply any credit from your account to this payment at the time and email you, if you have remaining monies owing. An Incursion Advice Form will be sent home in Week 8. The cost per child will range from $7 to $14, depending on the programs students will attend. All Pre-primary to Year 3 children will attend one Scitech session. Year 4-6 students will attend two Scitech sessions.
PROGRAM DETAILS
Junior Robotics and Coding (Pre-Primary – Year 2)
Learn the foundations of commanding and coding robots with Bee-Bots.
As robots become a bigger part of our day-to-day lives, developing skills to use and code robots is becoming a necessity. This engaging workshop inspires students with robotics and builds their foundation skills in coding such as creating basic algorithms and debugging. Students will work collaboratively to complete a set of challenges, from unplugged coding activities to manipulating Bee-Bot robots through a maze.
Rookie Robotics and Coding (Years 3-6)
Learn how to code and program a robotic vehicle, teaching it how to complete tasks using sensors!
Students learn about robots and their place in research and society, before exploring sensors that a robot vehicle needs to operate. Using Edison™ robots, students will learn how robots are programmed to complete a task.
CSI The Blackmail (Years 4-6)
Using their scientific inquiry skills, students are tasked with investigating a crime scene. They must examine the scene, analyse evidence to uncover clues, and develop an explanation for what happened! Can your group solve the mystery of the Missing Millions?
Beyond the Beaker (Years 5-6)
Prepare your students for a career in STEM with this interactive seminar-style program.
Welcome to the future – where science, technology, engineering, and maths are essential to both our work and day-to-day activities than ever before.
Showcasing how our work lives will change, this presentation explores how students can harness their STEM skills for maximum enjoyment, well-being and – perhaps most importantly – their career opportunities.
This interactive and informative experience is designed to inspire students to study STEM – both now and into their futures. It also shows how STEM is an important component of every job.
INTERM SWIMMING – Monday 4th December – Wednesday 13th December 2023 (Weeks 9-10 Term 4)
Please note that this year’s Interm Swimming is in Weeks 9 and 10 of Term 4. This is an 8 day program and swimming lessons will be held at Scarborough Beach Pool. The cost per child last year was $38.00. We do not have the costings yet for this year but the cost should be similar. Please expect the Excursion Advice Form to go home in Week 2, Term 4.
Finally, a heads up! The Book Lists for 2024 will be sent home in Week 3, Term 4. We appreciate these are expensive and that Term 4 is looking like an expensive term! Please feel free to go into your child’s class to look at their equipment from this year to see if you can reuse it next year.

There will be instruction sheets to get you going so don’t be shy. There will be pizza for everyone so make sure you book your free tickets here:

School Garden
The School garden is set for some action with the return of John Worthy and Peter Blanch back after long service leave. If you have some time, stop by and do some weeding on a Wednesday afternoon. A ‘little bit often’ is the motto so be a part of the school community and grab a weed or two and pop them in the compost tumbler.

Triple P: Parenting Children with ADHD - Online Workshop
Dear Parenting Heroes,
In the unique journey of parenthood, we sometimes find ourselves facing challenges we never anticipated. If you're raising a child diagnosed with ADHD, you may encounter obstacles that leave you feeling overwhelmed or unsure. To help navigate these challenges, we are excited to announce a free online workshop, hosted by the Statewide School Psychology Service.
When? 23rd August 2023
Time? 8:00pm - 10:00pm
Where? Online. Follow the link to join:
What's it all about?
We understand the complexity that accompanies parenting a child with ADHD. Moments of joy are often intertwined with feelings of frustration when standard parenting strategies appear ineffective. High expectations can sometimes lead to conflict and disappointment.
But take heart - you are not alone in this journey.
This workshop aims to arm you with strategies, tips, and a deeper understanding to help you navigate these challenges. And the best part? It's absolutely FREE!
This is your opportunity to gain insights, share experiences, and learn from experts in a supportive environment. Together, we can equip ourselves to guide our children to their fullest potential.
Remember, this is not just a workshop, but a platform to learn, share, and grow.
Looking forward to seeing you there!
Best regards,
Elouise Walker

Greetings Newborough School Community
Language helps us express our thought and feelings. It helps to express what is happening around us. Language can either set us up for failure or success. Being specific, using words in their context, and understanding the power of words is so important.
Why am I discussing this?
Words like bullying, lazy, spoiled, and stubborn are used frequently and can have a negative impact but most importantly misrepresent what could be happening.
Bullying vs. Conflict: Kids might label any negative interaction as "bullying." While bullying is repetitive, intentional harm or intimidation, not every negative encounter constitutes bullying. Some are just regular conflicts or misunderstandings.
Lazy vs. Struggling: Labelling a child as "lazy" might be overlooking underlying issues like learning disabilities, ADHD, depression, or personal trauma. It's essential to understand the root cause of a child's behaviour before making judgments.
Shy vs. Introverted: A child who doesn't actively seek social interaction might be called "shy" when, in fact, they might simply be introverted — comfortable and content with more solitude or smaller groups.
Disrespectful vs. Expressive: A child who speaks their mind or questions authority might be labelled as "disrespectful," when they might just be more expressive, curious, or encouraged at home to voice their opinions.
Spoiled vs. Overwhelmed: Sometimes, when children act out during instances like shopping trips, they are labelled as "spoiled." However, they might be overwhelmed due to sensory overload or are simply tired.
Bossy vs. Leadership Tendencies: A child who takes charge might be called "bossy," especially if they are a girl. However, these tendencies could be early signs of leadership skills.
Daydreamer vs. Deep Thinker: Some children are often lost in thought and might be termed "daydreamers" or "distracted" when they might be deep thinkers or processing their world in a more introspective manner.
Stubborn vs. Determined: A child who stands firm on certain points or doesn't easily shift their stance might be termed "stubborn." However, looked at from another angle, they might be displaying determination or deep-rooted beliefs.
Attention-seeking vs. Needing Support: Children who frequently act out might be labelled as "attention-seeking." Still, sometimes these behaviours signal emotional distress or a need for support and understanding.
Dramatic vs. Sensitive: Some children are more emotionally reactive or have stronger empathetic responses. Labelling them as "dramatic" can dismiss their genuine feelings or experiences.
Food for thought.

ATTENDANCE AND ABSENCES
Every day at school is important for every child from Kindergarten to Year 6. Our attendance mantra is EVERY CHILD, EVERYDAY AT SCHOOL. This includes being on time and ready to start the school day.
The school and Principal does not endorse children’s absences to go on holidays, greeting or saying goodbye to fly in fly out parents, special shopping trips and the like. These are unacceptable excuses that we hear too often. Parents are responsible and legally obliged to ensure their children attend school every day possible. Poor attendance not only severely impacts on your child’s learning but also on other children in your child’s class.
If you are having any difficulty getting your child to school let us know and we will try and help. Sometimes it seems easier to give into a child and keep them home for trivial reasons. This is fraught with short term and long-term danger. We have had a lot of success in this area when parents and the school work together. Make no excuses for not attending school.
Department of Education (Western Australia) policy states that all children from Pre-Primary attend school for 5 full days as from the commencement of the school year.
Attendance details are entered electronically twice daily by classroom teachers and the information fed onto a school database. An SMS messaging service endorsed by the Department of Education operates to enable parents to inform the school by text message if their child is going to be absent. The system also automatically sends a message to parents if their child has not arrived at school and no notification has been received. This service assists parents to advise the school of absences and also ensures the safety of children by letting parents know that the child has not arrived at school.
If your child will be absent/sick or late, please contact the school directly either by:
SMS: | 0409 088 585 (preferred method) |
Email: | Newborough.ps.absentee@education.wa.edu.au |
Phone: | 9278 0450 |
Please include only the student’s name and classroom number, reason for absence and the date in any messages. For Example: “John Doe Room 13 absent 1/2/2021 sick with flu”.
Notes are requested from parents for:
- Any absence from school
- Permission to go on vacation during term time
- Permission to leave the school grounds at any time including lunch time
- Nonparticipation in sport and physical education lessons

EXCURSIONS AND INCURSIONS
During the year teaching staff plan a range of suitable excursions and incursions to introduce, develop or reinforce learning experiences for their class.
Incursions are an opportunity for the children to experience high standard performances covering a wide range of learning areas. The children are able to see national, and sometimes international, performers including musicians, storytellers, artists and many others at a reasonable cost. Particular attention is given to developing the social skills of the children, as well as their confidence and independence.
Formal written permission is required before any child can be taken on an excursion. Every endeavour is made to space excursions/incursions during the year to avoid costs being too great at any one time. If payment is not received by the due date and a payment plan has not been entered into, students will not participate in that particular excursion/incursion and will join a buddy class on that day.

MOBILE PHONES POLICY
A reminder that the Western Australian Department of Education has a strict ban on students using mobile phones at school. Students who bring any mobile communication device, including phones, to school must hand it in to the classroom teacher or front office where it will be stored until the end of the day. The exception to this is the Years 4-6 students participating in the bring your own devices program, which allows the student to bring laptops to school, but still no mobile phones. Students who may require contacting parents during the school day can do this on the school landline phones with permission of the Admin team if the reason is for an emergency only.
