30 October 2024
Update from Principal
Dear Families
Another week has flown by, and it’s hard to believe we’re already in Week 4 of Term 4! Last Friday 25 October, we celebrated World Teachers' Day by expressing our gratitude to our fabulous teachers. A special thanks to Mulberry Tree for the delicious platters, and to our P&C for their generous donation of muffins and donuts. It was wonderful to officially recognise the hard work our teachers put in every day. I’m also excited to share that the new PA system has been installed and is all ready to go for Friday’s assembly hosted by Room 4. 😊
Don’t forget tonight, Wednesday 30 October, is our annual Open School Board Meeting. We hope to see you there at 6pm! Come through the front office, just before 6pm.
Booklists
As you are aware, Newborough Primary School is now using the Campion Online Ordering system for your child’s booklists for 2025.The Booklists for 2025 and the instructions on how to order through Campion, if you wish to use their services have now been emailed to all families. Also attached to the emails is a flyer with the images of the text books required for next year. To order, please click https://campion.com.au/ and use the code: T3WP (Please see the How to Order instructions attached and on our school website)
The Booklists are also on the Newborough Primary School website Newborough Primary School Booklists.
To prepare you on how to order the booklists with Campion Education, please view the link below for an instructional video.
One of the major changes to the booklists for 2025 is the delivery of the booklist to you. This can either be done through a Home Delivery to your house, collecting the booklist from Campion direct or choosing to use another educational supplier altogether of your own choice.
Campion also have a Parent Hub for tips, hints and help videos from the link below.
In collaboration with the School Board, we have created a private, closed Facebook Group exclusively for current staff, parents, and carers of current students. This group will not be open to extended family members (unless they are legal guardians) or former staff and students. Participation in the group is voluntary. Please click on the link below which will take you to the group and click on “join group”.
Guidelines for the Class Placement of Students 2025
Newborough Primary School staff are committed to meeting the educational needs of all students. A great deal of thought, planning and time goes into placing children into classes each year. Every effort is made to place each child in a learning environment that will be happy, productive, and successful. Please note that we do not stream classes, but we aim to create equitable and functioning class groups. The school plans classes so that as far as possible they do not exceed the recommended class sizes outlined in the relevant industrial agreements, but at the same time do not exceed the resource allocation made to the school.
When placing students, we consider factors during the process of allocating students to classes. These include:
- The balance of male and female students in each class.
- The number of students at each year level when composite classes are formed.
- The need for support for students with special needs or learning difficulties.
- The social dynamics of the cohort of students.
- The creation of equitable class sizes.
Parents may inform the school of any special circumstances that they believe needs to be considered when placing their child in a class. Communication regarding matters requiring special circumstances should be submitted in writing to the Principal or via email denise.jeffs@education.wa.edu.au before the end of the school day on Friday 8 November.
Please be aware, correspondence that will be considered but not guaranteed includes:-
- Issues relating to learning disabilities or difficulties.
- Issues relating to medical need or physical impairment will be considered.
- Emotional issues which dramatically impact the learning environment.
- Placement of multiples (twins, triplets, etc.) or defacto/step siblings in the same year level.
Correspondence that will not be considered includes: -
- Requesting or not requesting a teacher by name.
- Requesting a teacher of a particular gender.
- Requesting that two students be placed in the same class unless there is a documented, valid educational need for special consideration.
Class placements are made available to parents on the business day immediately preceding the first day of the academic year for students via SMS or email. In 2025, this will be Tuesday 4 February.
Parents may request a review of their child’s class placement by arranging a meeting with the principal. However, changes to placements are rare due to the fact they often cause a chain reaction and impact on the class balance, which in turn is unfair to many students within the group. Additionally, a child cannot be moved if the alternative class is already at capacity. While we strive to consider the individual child during the placement process, parents must realise their child is part of a complex equation in school placements. In any case, our experience with this process has shown that parent and student anxieties about a particular class placement usually resolve within the first week of school.
Split Classes
Each year all Public Schools make decisions about classroom structures, according to the number of students enrolled. The number of students enrolled in each year level often results in some or many classes being formed as composite or ‘split’ classrooms, with students from two-year levels being placed in the same class. When this happens, it can lead parents to wonder about why their child was placed in a composite class. Below is some information about split classes to help you understand this class structure a little more.
- There is no empirical evidence for any assumption that student learning is hindered in composite classes.
- There is evidence that students’ social and emotional well-being benefit from a composite class. Research suggests composites enhance self-esteem, decrease behavioural problems, reduce the impact of labelling, encourage the formation of positive communities and lead to social growth.
- Students requiring extra learning support, for challenges faced with their learning or a need for acceleration will be catered for equally well in a composite class.
- At Newborough Primary School we DO NOT stream our classes based on academic performance. Classes are based on the school’s knowledge of the student.
- We want to assure you that this is a commonplace classroom structure and will not be detrimental.

Newbro Dads
Newbro Fundraiser
Back by popular demand the wine fundraiser is this time here to support the Newbro Dads. Our Newbro Dads are all about hosting fun activities that foster engagement between kids and their dad, father figure and other role model dads. Dads who come along can volunteer or just join in the fun. We have dads across all year groups who can provide support and insight about our school and school community. We also catch up socially from time to time to meet new dads and build connection within our parent community.
Best of all most of our events are FREE. To do this we keep activities simple and we fundraise a few dollars each year to keep the P&C treasurer happy ;)
The Wine Fundraiser is a great way to fundraise and feedback about the wines has always been good. So, let’s jump in with two feet and support the Champion Dads of Newborough Primary School and buy some wine. Stock up on Xmas pressies, end of year gifts for the teachers, share the page with your friends and family. Everyone is welcome to order and support the Newbros.
Wines are purchased online using the linked page and can be home delivered ($10 postage) or collect from the school for free on Tuesday 10th December which is last week of school.

Newbros BIG School Camp Out
Term 4 is a crazy busy few weeks that just seems to gather momentum, curve this way and that then crash right into Christmas. Well the main event as far as the kids are concerned is the Newbros Big School Camp Out; “It’s a really fun time with all your friends” says one kid.
The Camp out is for everyone, all you need to do is stay true to the ‘Less is More” saying and keep it simple. We supply a basic dinner, icy pole, bacon and egg breakfast and a heap of activities. It’s a whole oval of fun located on Jim Hazlitt field Saturday 16th November from 3pm.
If you really cannot camp then come along just for the Saturday evening. The main thing is you must purchase a ticket regardless, so see the booking link for more details.
For Camp Out tickets please click on the link below:
The Camp Out is heaps of fun and only happens due to the amazing effort of the Newbro Dads. There are plenty of ways to help, just see the volunteer sign up sheet and pick a task.
