Principal’s Introduction
Dear Families
Introduction
I would like to say a huge thank you to the entire Newborough community for making me feel so welcome. Every day that I am here I am learning new things about our wonderful school, the students, staff and families. I know I have a lot to learn but the journey ahead is very exciting. I am looking forward to working with the School Board and P&C as well to find out more about the school and set the direction for the future.
End of Day Procedure
One of the things I am learning about is the end of day procedure with the locking of gates. This is a very well-established process and I remind parents and students that when the announcement at the end of day is put over, everyone who is on site leaves through the gates so they can be locked, and the school can be made secure for the evening. I understand that some students may be staying for netball or after school care or other organised events, but it is imperative that everyone else vacates the school grounds when asked to do so.
Canteen Closure
As per my email on Friday, there is no canteen this week due to tomorrow being the ANZAC Day Public Holiday which means there will not be an opportunity to prep food for Friday, hence why there is also no canteen on Friday 26 April.
Chaplain
Last Tuesday, we met our new chaplain, Louise Smith. Our chaplain Louise will support the social and emotional wellbeing of the students, staff, and families in the Newborough PS community.
As a YouthCare Chaplain, Louise is not a Department of Education employee and offers confidential pastoral care while adhering to Department of Education policy. A pamphlet introducing Louise and explaining the role of the chaplain and how to access her services will go home shortly.
Kind regards,
Denise Jeffs

Emotional Regulation Strategies
Dear Newborough Families,
Welcome back! Hopefully your break was restful and relaxing, and you are recharged for Term 2!
Did you know that naming and describing our feelings, as we experience them, serves as an emotional regulation strategy? In other words, simply labelling an emotion can help to decrease the intensity and duration of that emotion.
The scientific terminology for name it to tame it is “affect labelling”. Studies have shown that by putting feelings into words, the intensity of the emotion is reduced, well-being is promoted, and emotions can be more effectively managed. What’s pretty cool about affect labelling is that it doesn’t feel like an exercise in emotional regulation. It is more subtle and implicit than more common emotional regulation strategies (i.e., breathing techniques, grounding techniques, mindfulness techniques etc).
Attached are some resources that may be helpful. The Feel Wheel is targeted at children aged 5 to 12 and provides some vocabulary for students around emotions. I’ve also included the Mood Meter which maps emotions according to whether they are high to low on the energy scale and whether they are high to low on the pleasantness scale. This resource can be helpful if your young person is so distressed, they are unable to recognise their own emotions. By observing your young persons’ energy and whether the emotion is pleasant or not, you may be able to help them regulate by narrowing down what emotion they may be experiencing. By offering a label that may be within the ballpark of what they’re experiencing can serve to diffuse the emotion and start them on a path to regulation.
Wishing you a wonderful week.

Canteen
Welcome back to canteen for Term 2. Sushi Week was hugely popular, healthy, and great in this heat. We are closed this week due to ANZAC day and students away on holiday on the Friday. Sorry!
I'll send out more info on specials throughout the term, via the newsletter and the WhatsApp class rep group.
I will unfortunately have to put up the cost of the flavoured milk and juice bombs to cover some other additional costs.
We would really love to see you in the canteen to help out, especially on a Friday. Just an hour of your time or whatever you can to just chop some apples, lettuce, make some toasties. We're really struggling for volunteers.
Please use the volunteer sign up link below to add your name to the roster for term 2.
Training
There are now Department of Education training requirements in place for canteen volunteers. We would so much appreciate you taking the time to do the training. It's not at all difficult, mostly common sense and you can even do it while your favourite TV show is on!
The two courses that need to be completed are as follows. The training will be 2.5 hours total.
- Food Safety training
- All About Allergens

All canteen staff (and volunteers) are also required to complete All about Allergens training. All about Allergens for schools training is a FREE online course for anyone working in schools. The comprehensive program details need to know information relevant to those working or volunteering in a food service located in a school and is presented using videos and interactive activities. The course takes about 60-90 minutes to complete, and a certificate can be printed on completion. Access the course at: www.foodallergytraining.org.au

Newbro Dads
The Newbro dads had a good catch-up at The Saint last week for a few drinks and a chat. We have been holding back a little on event planning until the school admin changes progress and everyone settles into their new roles. So keep an eye out for the next meeting in a few weeks time.
What has been happening in the background is a few changes to the admin of the P&C with new email addresses now up and running. The Newbro Dads Group email is now:
Please amend your contacts and if you haven’t already, send us an email and we can add you to the WhatsApp chat to keep up to date.
Remember we are still swimming on a Friday morning at Trigg Beach from 6:30am. Come down for a quick swim and then a coffee at Canteen.
Cheers,
Newbro Dads
