Principal’s Introduction
Dear families,
I hope you all enjoyed a wonderful long weekend and that your start to the second half of Term 1 has been a good one. I think it’s safe to say that this term will be over before we know it!
It was wonderful to be part of our first class-led assembly last Friday where the amazing students in Room 13 introduced the school to Newborough’s 2024 vocabulary focus. The students ran us through some interesting facts, information about vocabulary and explained how we can be wonderful word collectors. Congratulations, Room 13 on your presentation, your confidence presenting in front of over 400 people, and your public speaking skills! We are looking forward to Room 10’s assembly on the last THURSDAY of the term, Thursday 28 March.
Australia’s National Be Kind Day was held on Saturday 2 March 2024. According to the dictionary, kindness is defined as the quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate. Kindness can mean different things to different people. The meaning is in how YOU choose to show it; be it through empathy, acceptance, kind gestures, thoughtfulness - the possibilities are entirely up to you. Kindness may mean being helpful or showing empathy, or it may mean doing nice things without expecting nice things in return. In line with our vocabulary focus this year, some synonyms for kindness include care, compassion, concern, friendliness, goodness, gracious, helpful, loving, neighbourly, patient, thoughtful and understanding. At Newborough, we value kindness and teach our students about how we show kindness in different ways.
School Board 2024
Last Thursday evening, Callan Rose, Newborough’s School Board Chair, led an induction session for our new Board members and helped our team understand the role of School Board members and how each person on the board can make a meaningful contribution to our school community.
The Newborough School Board works with our school community to achieve the best outcomes for our students. It plays an important role in contributing to good school governance so that our school resources are used efficiently, and community expectations and the school’s priorities reflect the needs of students. Our wonderful School Board supports the principal and staff to implement the strategic directions outlined in the Department of Education’s 2020-2024 strategic directions ‘Building on Strength’ and the Newborough PS Business Plan 2021-2024 to achieve year-on-year school improvement. Some of the responsibilities of the Board are listed below:
- Endorsing and reviewing the Business Plan and noting the school budget
- Annually approving charges and contributions to the community
- Positively promoting the school in the community
- Evaluating the school’s performance in achieving strategic directions and priorities
- Input into policy development
- Communicating with the broader community the functions of the Board
We thank our 2024 School Board members for their commitment to supporting our school this year and look forward to our first meeting of the year on Thursday 14 March 2024.
NAPLAN 2024
NAPLAN 2024 will take place from Wednesday 13 March to Monday 25 March. Each year the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is undertaken by students in Years 3 and 5 at our school. Students will participate in tests for Writing, Reading, Conventions of Language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and Numeracy.
NAPLAN is just one part of our school learning assessment program. The tests assess literacy and numeracy skills your child is already learning at school. In preparation for NAPLAN, we have already completed some practice test sessions with the students to help them become familiar with the format and functionality of the online tests.
The public demonstration site is available to see the types of questions, tools and functions used in the NAPLAN tests. NAP - Public demonstration site
P&C Colour Run – THIS Saturday 9 March 2024
Our P&C will be hosting our Colour Run on Saturday 9 March 2024 starting at 1:30pm. We are looking forward to a wonderful afternoon together and can’t wait to see what the course will be like this year!
At our assembly on Friday, I used a writing technique called alliteration for my Principal’s address – this was my alliteration attempt for the Colour Run:
Captivating colours will cascade and collide cheerfully at the Colour Run on March 9! Our community are looking forward to a kaleidoscope of kids cascading across the course, clutching cans of coloured powder.
Thank you to our amazing P&C for putting this event together for us! Please read more about the event in the P&C news below.
With many thanks,
Robyn Crump

MSP School Photos – Wednesday 6th March and Thursday 7th March 2024
Our annual school photos will be taken by MSP Photography on Wednesday 6th March and Thursday 7th March.
Students have now brought home a Unique Student Shoot Key with instructions for ordering student photos online through the MSP Website, if you choose to do so. If you lose the Shoot Key, your class teacher will be able to provide it to you again.
Students are required to wear their full school uniforms on the days of their photos and we request this is their yellow Newborough shirts, green bottoms, or their Newborough dress, including Year 6 students. Year 6 students will wear their lovely Graduation shirts in Term 4 for their Graduation photo. Kindy students will wear their green Kindy shirts, green pants or school dress.
Please read the attached Screed (Screed 2024) for full instructions and information on the procedures for school photos.
Edu-Dance Incursion Advice and Consent Form
This year, we have organised a fabulous, fun dance and fitness program called Edu-dance for Term 2 for all students Kindergarten to Year 6. Edu-Dance is a curriculum-based dance fitness program designed for primary school students. Edu-Dance focuses on physical fitness, dance confidence, developing self-esteem in students and teamwork. The lessons are high-energy with age appropriate choreography and music. The program is primarily hip-hop based in style but also touches on contemporary, musical theatre and Jazz genres. The program teaches each class a dance over the term which they then perform at a concert at the end of the program. These concerts will be in Weeks 9 and 10 of Term 2 and you will be informed of the exact times next term. Each lesson next term will be 30 minutes long. Teachers will let you know of the times for your child’s class closer to Term 2.
There are two different costs and notes for the program due to the age groups.
- The Kindergarten program is 9 weeks and costs $41.00 per child.
- The Pre-primary to Year 6 program is 10 weeks long and costs $36 per child.
*Please note costings are based on the overall cost of the program divided by the number of students participating.
The Consent and Advice Forms were sent home last week. The forms are also on our website.

Newbro Dads
Newbro Dads Group
Welcome back to everyone and welcome to the new families at NPS. The Newbro Dads is a group of dad parents who are keen to help dads and father figures engage with their kids in a friendly group environment. We are all volunteers who arrange some cool events like making paper planes, balloon tying, school gardening and of course the school camp out in Term 4.
To kick start the Newbro year we are having a Dads catch up arvo on Friday 15th March in the Sustainability Shed. We are firing up the pizza ovens and cooking a few pizzas. This catch up is ideally a kid free event so we can meet, chat and not be distracted by the kids. If you are stuck, of course you can let the kids play in the Nature Play area. The event is free so just bring yourself along, there will be gluten free options available.
Bring yourself down to the shed, next to the Nature Playground, from 5pm on Friday 15th March. We will be there till 8ish so pop in whenever you can and say hi. Look forward to seeing you there!! If you cannot make it then please join our FB page or email us for a link to out WhatsApp group.
